You know that T-shirt that you love so much but you cannot actually wear it because its beautiful days are long gone? We all have one favorite T-shirt we don’t want to throw away even though we cannot wear it anymore so, instead of saying goodbye to it, why not transforming it into something else?
You don’t have to be a DIY expert to transform your favorite T-shirt into a different thing and hold on to it a little longer. Upcycling old tees is simple and fun and we have 3 suggestions for you.
Braided Belts
The first upcycling idea for old tees is to braid them and transform them into beautiful belts. Your old tee will become a bohemian accessory and you will be able to wear it with summer dresses, skirts or jeans for a chic look.
What you need:
- Old tee
- 2 D-rings
- Needle and floss

Step 1: Cut 4 strips of the tee. Each strip should have about 6 cm. You can cut wider strips if you prefer a wider belt.
Step 2: Pin the ends together and place something on top of the ends to keep them in place or use some tape, your choice.
Step 3: Start braiding. If you are not sure how to do a four strand braid, check out this tutorial. You can also try a five strand braid if you want, just make sure you cut 5 strips of the tee before starting.
Step 4: Knot the end after you finished braiding then sew it.
Step 5: Now get back to the other end, the one you pinned down, and sew that end too. You can make several sews if you want.
Step 6: Wrap the first end (the one with one sew) around the D-rings and then sew it a couple of times.
Simple Scarves
If sewing and braiding are not actually your thing, you can transform your old tee into a scarf. You can make a cute scarf just by cutting your T-shirt. Simple, right?
What you need:
- Old tee
- Scissors

Step 1: Make a little cut with your scissors just under the arm holes.
Step 2: Tear the t-shirt across. Don’t cut it, tear it to make sure the fabric will curl. You can do the same thing on the other side if you want more curling. You can also stretch the fabric to make the scarf a little bit longer.
That’s it, it’s so simple!
